TV actor, producer, and screenwriter Valentine Palmer sets out to write the definitive account of the Titanic’s sinking. As the 100th anniversary of the fateful night approaches, Palmer follows up innumerable conflicting stories and theories that still, to this day, surround the doomed liner. Charles Herbert Lightoller, Palmer’s great uncle, was the highest-ranking surviving officer from the disaster. It was only after the great man’s death in 1952 that his sister, Gertrude, Palmer’s eccentric grandmother, began to hint to her young grandson of the contradictory accounts of both her brother’s supposed heroism and his suspect testimonies at the investigations into the sinking. Palmer’s grandmother doesn’t accuse Joseph Bruce Ismay, managing director of the White Star Line, in so many words. Rather, she chooses to address her grandson in riddles, which have taken him a lifetime to interpret. This, Grandma Gertrude hints, is the man who made her brother ´´an offer he couldn’t refuse´´! In-depth research by a number of parties over the past 100 years reveals that something was not quite right about the testimonies of both Ismay and Lightoller. Britain’s preparation for possible war with Germany, tales of gold and priceless treasures aboard the doomed liner and a possible insurance fraud of unimaginable complexity are just some of the mysteries and possible conspiracies that Palmer seeks to shed new light on in this fascinating book. With dogged determination he works his way through the revelations of his great aunt, Lightoller’s widow, and his maternal grandmother’s hints of cover-ups at the highest level. Palmer’s searches take him through the maze of conflicting testimonies and reported conversations from survivors. His task becomes ever more daunting as he sees the truth, like his great uncle’s honour, become increasingly shrouded in the mists of time. 1. Language: English. Narrator: Valentine Palmer. Natural Rasta reinforces the italism that most Rastas are devoted to, embracing nature, ital food, our ancestors and Jah Ras Tafari. Childhood Days Childhood Days is all about growing up in Jamaica where all youths get a beating from their parents so that they grow up in a respectable way. Among the young peredvizhniki who joined the World of Art group, the most brilliant portraitist was Valentin Serov. Like many of his contemporaries, he delighted in painting out of doors, and some of his most appealing portraits - such as Girl with Peaches, Girl in Sunlight and In Summer - owe their naturalness to their setting or to the interplay of sunlight and shadows. Indeed, Serov regarded them as studies rather than portraits, giving them descriptive titles that omitted the sitters name. The subject of Girl with Peaches - painted when Serov was only twenty-two - was in fact Mamontovs daughter Vera. The model for In Summer was Serovs wife. When only six years old, Serov began to display signs of artistic talent. At nine years old, Repin acted as his teacher and mentor, giving him lessons in his studio in Paris, then let Serov work with him in Moscow, almost like an apprentice. Eventually Repin sent him to study with Pavel Chistiakov - the teacher of many of the World of Art painters, including Nesterov and Vrubel. Chistiakov was to become a close friend. Because Serovs career spanned such a long period, his style and subject matter vary considerably, ranging from voluptuous society portraits (the later ones notable for their grand style and sumptuous dresses) to sensitive studies of children. Utterly different from any of these is the famous nude study of the dancer Ida Rubinstein, in tempera and charcoal on canvas, which he painted towards the end of his life. Although Serovs early style has much in common with the French Impressionists, he did not become acquainted with their work until after he had painted pictures such as Girl with Peaches.
