Three arias from the opera Le Grand MacabreInstrument : coloratura soprano and pianoNombre de Pages : 30I composed my opera Le Grand Macabre from 1974 to 1997. The Mysteries of the Macabre are arrangements of three coloratura arias of the chief of the “Secret Political Police†which have been arranged (beautifully!) for chamber ensemble by Elgar Howarth. My friend Howarth had conducted the world premiere of the opera in Stockholm in 1978 and some of the further productions. The half-nonsense text is an immediate ‴´ however more accurate ‴´ continuation of the idea of my works Aventures and Nouvelles Aventures, but there is no chromatics in the music any more.
Cantata for Mezzosoprano and PianoInstrument : mezzo-soprano and pianoType : single sheetNombre de Pages : 48Sung texts are in Greek; English, German and French translations are included. A good friend of mine, the poet lacovos Kambanellis, was a prisoner in Mauthausen during World War 11. At the beginning of the sixties, he wrote his memories of this time und er the title of Mauthausen. In 1965, he also wrote four poems on the subject and gave me the opportunity to set them to music. I did this with much pleasure, firstly because I liked the poetry of the texts, and secondly because I was myself locked up during the Nazi occupation in Italian and German prisons, but mainly because this composition gives us the chance to remind the younger generation of history, that history that must never be forgotten. First and foremost, of course, the Mauthausen Cantata is addressed to all those who suffered under Fascism and fought against it. We must keep the Nazi crimes continually in our minds, because that is the only guarantee and the only way to assure that they are not repeated. And we can see every day that the ghost of Fascist is far from being laid. It seldom shows its real face, but Fascist cultures and mentalities exist all over the world. For us, who had to live through this time of horror, the most important task is to protect our children against this peril. (Mikis Theodorakis, 1999)Content : I Ásma Asmáton (The Song of Songs) - II O Andónis (Andonis) - III O Drapétis (The Fugitive) - IV Áma Teli´si o Pólemos (When the War is Over)
Written Early, Orchestrated LateThe cycle was put together in 1928, more than 20 years after the composition of the individual songs. From the large amount of songs for voice and piano that he had written in his early years, Alban Berg selected seven of them which he then orchestrated. After serious consideration, he laid down a definitive sequence in which the tempo constantly alternates while the orchestral instruments symmetrically recede before picking up again. Once the piano and orchestral editions were printed, the Seven Early Songs quickly conquered concert halls in both scorings. They are still at home on the concert stages of the world today – which is reason enough to present this work by Alban Berg in an Urtext edition following the Violin Concerto.
Antonin Dvorak (1841-1904) composed the volume of sevensongs entitled Gypsy Songs,Op. 55, for the excellent German tenor Gustav Walter (1834-1910), a member ofthe Wiener Hofoper (Vienna Court Opera). He thus wrote them to the German translations of poems adapted for him by their author, Czech poet Adolf Hejduk. The original Simrock edition from 1880 only came with a text in German; a further edition from 1881 now contained Czech and English versions. The songs proved to be extremely popular withsingersand audiences alike; the fourth one (Songs my mother taught me)became one ofthe most famous of its kind in the world repertoire. In this volume, the songsaretransposed for upper voices (soprano/tenor). The vocal text is here publishedinits Czech, English and German versions. This title was published as part of the Complete Critical Edition of Works by Antonin Dvorak. •Má písen zas mi láskou zní / Mein Lied ertönt, ein Liebespsalm / My song of love rings thourgh the dusk •Aj !
